Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic illness involving your central nervous system (CNS). The immune system attacks myelin, which is the protective layer around nerve fibers. As your immune system attacks myelin, it causes inflammation and scar tissue or lesions on the nerve fibers.  Inflammation and scar tissue damage the myelin on the nerves interfering with the conduction of signals between your brain and other parts of your body.

Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis experience a wide range of symptoms that can vary significantly from person to person.  They can also change in severity from year to year, month to month, and even day to day. Two of the most common symptoms are fatigue and difficulty walking. Difficulty walking can lead to an increase in fall risk and the potential for injuries.  Symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis are:

  • Numbness in your legs or feet (neuropathy)
  • Difficulty with balance or proprioception
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle spasticity
  • Vision difficulties
  • Chronic fatigue
