A bunion is a misalignment of the bones in the foot. A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony protuberance at the base of the big toe that can become painful. This occurs when something causes the big toe to turn inward, bending toward (or even under) the other toes.
A bunion forms when the bones that make up the metatarsal phalangeal (MTP) joint move out of alignment. The long metatarsal bone shifts toward the inside of the foot, and the phalanx bones of the big toe angle toward the second toe. The big toe joint (MTP joint) gets larger and protrudes from the side of the base of the big toe joint. (https://orthoinfo.aaos.org)
Bunions May Be Caused By:
- Wearing poorly fitting shoes—in particular, shoes with a narrow, pointed toe box that forces the toes into an unnatural position.
- Wearing pointed high heeled shoes that force the toes towards the front of the shoe and crowds the toes.
- Heredity—some people inherit feet that are more likely to develop bunions due to their foot shape and structure.
- A medical condition such as inflammatory arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Bunions can be painful and in an effort to avoid the discomfort they can cause gait patterns to be altered. Bunions also create foot deformities which can make it difficult to find shoes that fit properly and do not irritate the side or top of the bunion.
