Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal column narrows and starts compressing the spinal cord. Spinal nerves emanate from the spinal cord housed inside the spinal column. Spinal nerves run through openings in the vertebrae of the spine and conduct signals from the brain to the rest of the body. These signals are responsible for the motor and sensory functions of our body or the ability to move body parts and to feel sensations. The surrounding bone (vertebral column) and tissues (muscles, ligaments, fascia) help to protect these nerves. If the spinal nerves are damaged or impaired in any way, it can affect functions like walking, balance, and sensation. Spinal stenosis often occurs gradually as a result of the body's degenerative aging process and can take place anywhere along the spine. If the narrowing is minimal, no symptoms will occur. Too much narrowing or pressure can compress the nerves and cause problems.
Spinal stenosis typically progresses over time, as nerves become more compressed. Symptoms may include: leg or arm weakness, drop foot, lower back pain while standing or walking, numbness in the legs or buttocks and difficulty with balance. This can lead to weakness in the extremities, neurological deficits affecting movement and sensation as well as an increased fall risk.
